At The Tempus, we’ve reimagined the traditional hotel experience, creating a destination centred around choice, character, and relaxed countryside living.
Rather than one single building, our accommodation is thoughtfully spread across the estate, offering a collection of unique spaces, each with its own distinctive style. From elegant bedrooms and suites in the main house to secluded lakeside cabins and glamping yurts, every stay offers a different experience and a new way to enjoy the countryside.
Each room has been individually designed with bold interiors, luxurious comforts, and characterful details throughout. Natural textures, original stone, rich timbers, and vibrant touches combine to create spaces that feel stylish, welcoming, and full of personality. Whether you’re looking for a cosy countryside retreat, a romantic lakeside escape, or a memorable group getaway, The Tempus offers something for every guest.
More than just a place to stay, The Tempus is a destination to experience. Guests and visitors are invited to dine in our orangery restaurant, enjoy cocktails and relaxed drinks in our vibrant bar, or gather in our iconic tipi for seasonal events, celebrations, and unforgettable evenings throughout the year.
Surrounded by open landscapes, peaceful lakeside views, and quiet moments of escape, The Tempus offers the perfect balance of energy, relaxation, and refined hospitality.
No two stays are ever the same and that’s exactly how we designed it.
The Tempus is a place rich in history, character, and thoughtful reinvention. Its story began in 1878, when the Thorp family took ownership of the estate, caring for it over generations until 2017, when Richard Shell took over with a vision to restore and reimagine the site for a new era.
Following the transformation of Charlton Hall into one of the North East’s most distinctive wedding venues, Richard turned his attention to creating what is now The Tempus. Using original stone, slate, and timber reclaimed from the estate’s former farm buildings, the hotel was designed to honour its heritage while introducing a bold and contemporary style.
Working alongside interior designer Jo Aynsley of Jeffreys Interiors, the spaces were brought to life with vibrant colours, playful touches, and characterful interiors that blend luxury with personality.
Since opening in May 2023, The Tempus has evolved into a truly unique countryside destination, home to a lively bar, orangery restaurant, boutique bedrooms and suites, glamping yurts, and lakeside cabins with stunning sunset views across the water.
