A FAMILY AFFAIR- OUR STORY
The Tempus is part of the Charlton Hall Estate, a place rich in history and character. It all began in 1878 when the Thorp family took over the estate, remaining for generations until 2017, when Richard Shell stepped in with plans to reimagine and restore its charm.
After transforming Charlton Hall into one of the North East’s most unique wedding venues, Richard turned his attention to what would become The Tempus. Using original stone, slate, and timber from the old farm buildings, the hotel was designed to feel steeped in history, yet infused with vibrant colours, fun, and bold interiors, thanks to the talented Jo Aynsley at Jeffreys Interiors.
Since opening in May 2023, The Tempus has blossomed into something truly special, featuring a lively bar, an orangery restaurant, and 17 dreamy bedrooms. As of August 2025, we are thrilled to announce that our eight lakeside cabins are now open, offering guests stunning sunset views by the water.
